Soon you will pack up your things, load the car and make your way to University.
It may sound cliché to say this is the beginning of the rest of your life, but it really is. University is the first time in your life you will be totally self-reliant (bar the odd food package from Mum and Dad). You will suddenly be responsible for your own time, all of it…each second, minute, hour, day. It’s going to be fun.
You are entering a new phase. You’re going to meet people from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. You’re going to make new friends. You’re going to find out if teaching really is something you want to do.
Eek, another cliché alert…you’re going to find out who you really are. I mean, you’re pretty damn great already; you constantly amaze me with your maturity, wisdom and humour. But at uni you can be whoever you want to be, the guard you’ve kept up with those in small-town Cornwall can come down and you’re free to just.be.you.
Think of uni as your chance to dress in vivid colour instead of the black we usually wear head to toe. Show people the many different faces of Kate. Make them see you as I do…fucking fabulous.
That being said, University is going to be a struggle. It’s a huge adjustment to leave home for the first time so don’t feel bad if you need to call home every day and just have a chat, we’re all at the end of the phone ready to listen to the tales of your new fresher life and reassure you that everything is going to be OK.
In school you were unlucky to be surrounded by shitty people, you can forget them now; they aren’t with you any longer. You can make new friends at uni. Some new friends you’ll only know for one night or one week, and that’s normal. Others you won’t meet until you’re settled into your uni routine. Some may become friends for life, others, friends for now. Again, that’s OK. Remember everyone at uni is in the same boat, desperate to make friends, so meet lots of people and don’t rush into friendships, let them happen naturally.
Guys. There are going to be a lot of guys at uni, thousands in fact. HAVE FUN, this is your chance to experiment, but be safe. I have to say that, I’m your big sister. But even if I wasn’t I’d still want you to be cautious. You are the best judge of you and only know your limits. Don’t let anyone push you to do anything you don’t want to do. That goes for all aspects of your life to be honest. Just do you.
Like I said, this is the start of the rest of your life and you’re going to do great. I can’t wait to see the person you become in the next 4 years. Just promise me you won’t be too cool for amateur ballet sessions with your sis every once in a while.
Love you sissy.
P.S Littlest Sis, you rule the roost now…I mean you kind of already did but now Kate’s gone you’re head honcho. You guys are going to miss each other but that’s good, it’ll bring you closer. Let’s arrange a sister weekend once Kate is settled in but until then, Whatsapp me more!! Sana saaa.
